Sound examples: aliasing in amp simulation

aliasing

This year in August Kuassa added an oversampling switch to their Creme and Vermilion rack extensions to prevent it from producing annoying aliasing sounds (see my post). The switch gives you 4 choices:

  • 1x oversampling (no oversampling!)
  • 2x oversampling
  • 4x oversampling
  • 8x oversampling

Keep in mind that higher oversampling settings will use more CPU power. In practice 8x oversampling, although the safest bet, is not always needed. I found out that even 2 times oversampling is often enough. Check for example the sound examples below. It’s a bit annoying to listen to these tracks ’cause I am bending the high e-string of my guitar in such a way so you can hear the aliasing which is going on. But I think you’ll get the clue 😀

Not sure what kind of oversampling Softube Amp in Reason is using, but it’s obviously clear of aliasing.

P.S. these tests are done using a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. Sometimes I use 48 kHz for video projects.
