A few days ago Gibson announced that it is “ceasing active development and production of Cakewalk branded products.” Does that mean the end of Sonar? I guess so. And what about the Momentum app for mobile devices which was recently released? I guess that dies too. Maybe even my beloved RE-2A Compressor/Limiter will be removed from the Propellerhead Shop as a result of this. HATE it!
But I have a solution to these unfortunate developments. Something that will help us all:
Make all the Cakewalk products available as open source products!
All products, including the RE-2A. Make the world a better place Gibson!

I guess it’s a great idea. Too good stuff to just let it die!
That would be cool, but even if they wanted to this might be impossible, because many complex software products contain software libraries that are licensed from third parties and are not under control of the company releasing the final product. They’d have to get an ok from every party involved to open source the whole product.
Yes that might make it super complicated indeed. Unfortunately.
